The museum shows the life and work of Richard Wagner, his influence and the history of the Bayreuth Festival from the collection of the National Archives of the Richard Wagner Foundation Bayreuth.

Opened initially in 1976, the museum, with Richard Wagner’s former residence “Wahnfried” at its centre, was reopened in 2015 after five years of renovation including complete redesign and structural extension. Since then, the Richard Wagner Museum has been home to three permanent exhibitions supplemented by several special exhibitions each year.
